Problem & opportunity
As gaming expanded beyond a single console, Discord became the default social hub for multiplayer — yet Xbox players still leaned on legacy Party Chat, mobile workarounds, or a second device running Discord.
The opportunity wasn't to replace Discord, but to integrate it natively into Xbox in a way that respected how players already behaved.

Approach
We focused on four pillars: Discord voice on console, persistent voice channels, console streaming into Discord, and unified Xbox–Discord identity and presence.
To move fast, I reused existing console components and our Twitch-streaming infrastructure — reducing new-feature friction while keeping the ten-foot interface scannable and native to the console.

Impact
Within six months of launch, the integration reached 3.7M+ monthly active users. Discord Nitro became the top-performing subscription perk with 1.3M+ redemptions, and at peak the system supported 7M+ daily callers averaging ~2 hours per session.
